My favorite concept from the semester was nonverbal communications in expressions. This concept was about how we communicate through our expression and actions. I really love this concepts because, as I said in a previous post, it is something I do in cheerleading. We can be having the worst day ever but you would never guess it because we use facials to play it off as if we are the happiest people in the world. (even when our football team is losing and it’s raining!) Also in everyday life, we can read the people we come in contact with just by how they show their emotions on their face. When you see someone happy they have a smile on, their eyes are bright and their cheeks are glowing. On the other hand when some ones crying we can see sadness in their eyes. Communication is more than verbal exchange of words. It is learning to listen to what their facial expressions are saying.
That's a really great example of nonverbal expression! I have never thought about that before, but that is true that cheerleaders must put on their game face so to speak in order to pump up the crowd with spirit and show their support for the team. I can't think of a time I have seen a cheerleader with a frown on her/his face while he/she was facing the crowd. I feel like I use a lot of nonverbal expression at my job as well. There are times when I am tired or have physical pain and I have to keep a smile on my face and exhibit positive body language simply because I don't want others to feel like I am taking out my frustration on them at all.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post. I also agree with you that nonverbal is also my favorite concept from this course. i feel that when it comes to communication, nonverbal is the most important. I think that especially in small group communication it is important to be aware to nonverbal communication. Your example was a good one, when i played sports i also had to be aware of my nonverbal communication and facial expressions because if a scout was there to watch you want to make sure that you are not expressing something that may be portrayed as bad. Overall I agree with you and am happy that we are toward the end!
ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post. I also found my favorite concept to be nonverbal communication because to me personally, nonverbal communication have a big impact when I am in or around a small or large groups and how just expressions alone have a big impact on how someone may think about or of someone or something occuring. I really enjoyed how you mentioned your facial expressions and nonverbal communication in cheerleading because when I was a cheerleader back in the day, every time a girl would make a facial expression or have her body language a certain way, any of us would be wondering what that means. On a daily basis, based on someone's nonverbal communication such as gestures, or facial expressions, I can tell if they are having a bad day or not, or if they are excited about something. At the same time however, we may get the wrong imoression of a facial expression, so that is why it is good to be aware of nonverbal communication and how it impacts us in society.
Great post overall!
